DOWNSIDE ROAD

GUILDFORD

VIEW SIMILAR PROJECTS

The owners of this hillside property on the outskirts of Guildford approached Snell David with the challenge of considering options for remodelling and extending their home.  They wanted to make the most of the beautiful views to the countryside beyond and to create cohesive entertaining spaces.

The new extension at ground floor was used to create a large open plan dining space which opens out to the terrace beyond.  A further ground floor extension creates a route into the newly extended lower ground floor gym and golf simulator.  The distinctive mono-pitch design was borne out of necessity as much as response to the steep pitched nature of the existing house.  The pitches were needed to soften the design, whilst being low enough to allow for uninterrupted views from each of the rooms.

Zinc cladding was used on the extensions, to visually separate the old from the new, whilst wild flower green roofs visually extend the garden up to the ground floor level.  The extensive external terrace was set at varying levels to create different seating zones and is clad in thin strips of timber and finished with clear glass balustrades.
