26 WEST END

WHITTLESFORD

26 West End is a charming pre-1900s farmhouse, symmetrically proportioned with an elegant rendered façade and slate tile roof. While rich in historical character, a tired 1980s rear extension had become inefficient for a growing young family. The project involved demolishing this outdated addition and replacing it with a two-story extension that blends traditional aesthetics with modern functionality. Minor renovations and layout refinements were made to the existing house to better suit the client’s lifestyle.

Situated within a conservation area, the design needed to respect the home’s heritage while remaining subservient to the original structure. A glazed link was introduced to bridge old and new, serving as a natural transition improving internal circulation but also enhancing views and access to both sides of the garden.

The new extension provides a spacious, open-plan kitchen, sitting, and dining area on the ground floor, designed to flow effortlessly into the garden. Upstairs, a new master suite and an additional bedroom enhance the home’s liveability.

To ensure architectural continuity, the extension’s finer aggregate render mirrors the existing house materiality, while the original façade was repainted to match the style of locally listed buildings. For a subtle contemporary touch, smooth-rendered frames were introduced around the windows facing Beech Tree Lane, adding architectural interest while respecting the home’s historic character.
